In 2017, after years of neglect, I started to rebuild my spiritual foundation.  As I constructed my new infrastructure, I knew I needed vital components that would ensure its success. Below, I share a few easy steps to help others create a healthy spiritual foundation.

When an architect designs a high-rise, the most crucial aspect of the building is its foundation; without it, the building will collapse.  So before you venture on your spiritual journey, it is essential that you lay down a strong foundation.  If you are without this firm spiritual groundwork, you cannot withstand the storms that life may place in front of you. There are many contrasting views on how one might do this, but I would like to share my process with you.

Three essential steps that can help guide you to creating a strong spiritual foundation:

  • Set aside daily time to quiet your mind.  I get up an hour before the rest of my family and meditate. This quiet time allows for relaxation and introspection.

  • Join a small group-  We aren’t made to go it alone so don’t! A Connection with others the bedrock of building a strong foundation.   In my small group, we share our experiences, the ever-expanding perspective of our spiritual lives, family, the world we live in and how we can be of service to others.  This is where the deep work can happen!

  • Find a mentor; someone who understands your journey and can assist you in navigating difficult times.  Find a mentor that can also pour into you and provide with the direction needed to find what it is you seek.

Lastly, the final piece of your foundation is your heart commitment. If you’re not all in and committed to building a strong foundation, it will eventually crack and disintegrate leaving you with nothing.

So, before you begin: ask yourself these four simple questions:

  • How are you laying down a strong foundation?
  • Do you have an active support system that you can lean on?
  • Have you forgiven yourself and others unconditionally?
  • Am I all in?

Even after you construct your solid foundation, there will be times where you will have setbacks. New obstacles will present themselves but by designing this initial infrastructure those moments will no longer feel insurmountable. Our work is never really finished.  Blessings to you and your journey!

  1. I agree that it’s important to set aside time for our spirituality. It can be hard to fit it in, but it has a very positive impact on the rest of our lives when we do. It’s worth it.

  4. I find it’s easy to neglect my spiritual journey as a busy single mom. My daily life is so full of chores that I just move through my routine and don’t take enough time for myself.

  5. Very good points about building a solid foundation. Ou are only as good as your base. You will crumble in the hard times of your not grounded.

  8. Thank you for sharing how you constructed your spiritual foundation. In this fast-paced world it is something we tend to neglect. I discovered mindfulness for myself about two years ago and also meditate every morning. I love this “me time” and that I notice myself calmer and more patient. Great tips!

  9. I have recent began to meditate for around 30 minutes a day. I’m not all that good but it is me time that I did not factor in before hand. This has been most helpful

  18. Great tips but even after your on the right path it’s going to take a commitment and focus to follow through. I do get up early but it would be nice to someone reflect before I went to bed as well but I can’t figure that time out prior to sleeping and I want to be mindful in it. A mentor would be great. That would be a great asset in additon to the group.

  23. I met God at the age of 21, when he miraculously released me from heroin. Since then, I’ve had conversations with him every day, my life has changed drastically. Once a week, I meet people who have experienced similar experiences. We talk and pray together.

  28. This was wonderful. Having strong spiritual foundation is key to maintaining a healthy balance (especially when you go through any major trials). Having a support system via family, groups, church, etc that you can turn to will help make thing easier.

  29. This is very true. Having a strong spiritual foundation/base is key, especially when things get rough. Whether it’s family, groups, etc…it’s always good to have a ‘home’/familiar faces to help guide you.

  30. Our life is so fast-paced that spiritual things get overshadowed by our daily to-do lists, projects and whatnot. I am practicing Christian and prayer often helps me find that perfect balance, my own little state of zen 🙂
