How We Kicked an Upper Respiratory Infections Ass with Essential Oils

The Defiant Teen

This week has been tough; my entire household went down minus me of course; I am exhausted but not sick. About a week ago our son Logan started to feel under the weather. He’s our kid that no matter what I suggest he is not doing it he doesn’t believe as he calls them “my witchy ways” work.  So, he decided to handle it himself; he is 17, and so I said ok. (within reason of course) Five days later we are in the urgent care for two reasons: one he needed a note for work, and he sounded awful.  The doctor tells us it is an upper respiratory infection and hands us some steroids. Insert eye roll and an are you kidding me! We grab our Dr. note and head to our pharmacy. He is still insisting he knows best; I love this kid but man what a thick head. The steroids were not taken.

Two More Go Down(well not Really)

During the five day period, we all tried to stay away from him as much as possible, but we do live in the same house, so its pretty impossible not to run into each other. Sophie & Philip took their Inner Defense daily, and I added a few essential oils to their daily routine. Unfortunately, this bug was persistent, and we didn’t catch it soon enough. On Sunday these two started feeling worse; so I stepped up my essential oil game.  I have to be honest they were not the BIGGEST fans of what I suggested, but they did corporate. Logan finally came around, but it took some convincing.

Here’s what We did

Diet is key too

Avoid the Following:

  • dairy
  • caffeine
  • acidic foods(like tomatoes, orange juice, etc.)
  • scratchy foods like chips, nuts, and granola
  • processed foods

Foods You Should Be Eating:

  • Raw honey
  • Bone Broth
  • Peppermint Tea
  • Soft Foods (scrambled egg or mashed potatoes)
  • leafy greens
  • foods rich in antioxidants( berries, kale, spinach)
  • Ginger Tea

I am happy to say my crew is feeling much better, and I think (I am not sure) but Logan might be a BELIEVER in my witchy ways now!

Finding My Identity After All These Years-One Step at a Time

I have been all over the place this year! ( I think my family thought I lost my mind and some days it sure felt like it) Last year was all about shedding the shit, moving through pain, people and hurt that held me back for decades. This year was all about leaning into my purpose and finding my sweet spot.  What direction to go with my business, my family and my blog? For so many years I have dedicated myself to our kids and our family; I am still in the mom game, but the kids don’t need me as much anymore. At first, I was pretty upset about that, but then I thought damn Philip & I had done a great job with this parenting thing our kids are pretty self-sufficient.

Now What Part One

So, the journey begins NOW WHAT?  I am sure this will resonate with a lot of you: When you have been immersed in kids, household duties and family for years when you finally look up from it the person you see staring back is not the person you knew some 17 years ago. My first inclination was to go back to school, get more certifications, try areas of study that seem to fit the latest niche and join every freaking Facebook group I could. Shit, the landscape has changed since I was in the workforce, the people, the problems, the marketing insert it and I was learning it for the first time. I started trying on hats, health coach(too big), manifest coach(too confusing), wellness writer(too boring).  After, months of trying to fit every square peg into every proverbial round hole I decided to stay in the field that made me complete all those years ago essential oils and formulating essential oil products.

Quieting the Self-Sabotage

Now, that I made the decision the voices in my head started shouting you haven’t been formulating for years and why share that here at WSCF; if you stay you can’t grow? (and who wants that). That’s when I decided to grab a glass of wine and talk it out with my dear friend Lisa, and she said; “You’re not going back you’re moving forward to the next chapter in your life and your business.” And with that comment, I decided WSCF is where I will stay.

Another added bonus to me staying here is that I get to introduce you all to my fantastic daughter Sophie. Sophie has decided to join me and as corny as it sounds I am over the moon about it! (she can teach us all a little about perseverance and dedication even at the age of 14). I am so excited to share her wisdom, her passion for helping others and her designs.

With So Much Appreciation

Lastly, I want to thank all of you for the support you have given me throughout years; I pledge to show up and always to be my authentic self. (even when it doesn’t look pretty)

So, I am going to leave it right here short sweet without a ton of BS; just straight up excitement about coming home to WSCF. Man, I have missed this place:)

All Natural Household Cleaners Eliminating Hazardous Chemicals from Your Home

There are a lot of great reasons why should make your own household cleaners.  The chemicals found in most of these cleaners: floors, toilets, oven, windows, and more contain chemicals that may throw your hormones out of whack. These endocrine disruptors can interfere with the production, release, transport, metabolism, or elimination of the body’s natural hormones. They can mimic naturally occurring hormones, potentially causing overproduction or underproduction of hormones. If these harmful side effects aren’t enough to deter you from using traditional household cleaners here are few more; they can encompass everything from breathing in toxic fumes, skin, lung & eye irritations to even painful chemical burns.

On the lighter side one, my other favorites reasons for using non-toxic cleaners allows me to get our kids involved and with three dogs, two cats and a messy crew like mine I need all the help I can get.

Hazards in your Home:

After years of concocting cleaners, I have finally come up with a core of cost consciences & safe household cleaners.

Here are a few items you should have on hand before you start to create your household cleaners.

Baking Soda

Cleaning Vinegar (Lemon Scent)

Church & Dwight Co 03020 Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda 55 oz. (found in the laundry soap aisle)

20 Mule Team Borax Natural Laundry Booster, 65 oz (also in the laundry soap section)

1 Gallon Organic Liquid Castile (Soap Base) (super cost effective makes great handsoap too)

Everyday Oils Essential Oil Collection
(this pack here has several wonderful oils so get creative)

Amber Spray Bottles 16oz with Reusable Chalk Labels (2 Pack), Heavy Duty Mist and Stream Sprayer (when using essential oils you will need a colored spray bottle)

An Old Liquid Detergent Bottle 50oz

Now, if time does not permit you to make your own then I highly recommend Thieves Household Cleaner.

All-purpose Cleaner:

2 teaspoons Borax

1/4 cup Vinegar

5 Drops Lavender Essential Oil

Fill 16 Oz spray bottle with warm water

Liquid Laundry Soap

1 quart of hot water

1 cup liquid Castile Soap

2 cups Washing Soda

1/2 cup Baking Soda

2 cups Borax

Pour Castile soap in empty detergent bottle

Using a funnel, add Borax, Baking Soda & Washing Soda

Add warm water to mixture

Swirl around to ensure dry ingredients dissolved

Fill detergent bottle with warm water

15 drops Lavender Essential Oil or oil to your liking

Soft-Scrub of Sorts

There is not much measuring to do here. Just place a small amount of baking soda in a bowl, adding liquid Castile soap until it forms a smooth paste. You can add a few drops of your preferred essential oil too. Great for tubs, sinks, sneakers, etc.

Window Cleaner

16 oz spray bottle

1 cup vinegar

fill a spray bottle with warm water

Shake before use

Disinfecting Floor Cleaner

1/2 cup boraz

1 gallon of hot water

8 drops of Lavender  or Thieves essential oil

essential oil

Mix all ingredients in a heavy-duty mop bucket.  Great for tile floors in bathrooms and kitchens

Wood Floor Cleaner

1 gallon of warm water

1 tablespoon of Castille soap

1/4 cup vinegar

10 drops Lemon essential oil

8 drops Orange essential oil

Mix soap and vinegar in a heavy duty mop bucket. Once mixed add your favorite essential oil in. I usually add a few drops of Lemon & Orange essential oil.

I hope these all natural budget-friendly recipes encourage you to start making your own household cleaners!

****The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health has found that one-third of the substances used in the fragrance industry is toxic. But because the chemical formulas of fragrances are considered trade secrets, companies aren’t required to list their ingredients but merely label them as containing “fragrance.”

Adding to My All Natural Medicine Cabient: Eucalyptus Radiata Essential Oil

Eucalyptus Radiata essential oi:

is known to be much milder than Eucalyptus Globulous because of its softer odor.  Eucalyptus Radiata is considered the most therapeutic of all three varieties of Eucalyptus Essential Oil. Eucalyptus Radiata is preferred by aromatherapist for its milder tones especially when treating younger children and the elderly.

History:

The Eucalyptus tree is native to Australia, therefore not surprisingly this country is the leading producer of the essential oil where it is widely used in the pharmaceutical industry. Unlike its cousins Eucalypts Globulus and Citriodora, the Radiata variety that is never cultivated in large-scale.   Non-Australian sources dominate the commercial eucalyptus oil supply, although Australia continues to produce high-grade oils, mainly from blue mallee (E. polybractea) stands.

Some Additional Benefits:

Eucalyptus Radiata has a wide range of therapeutic properties it is a powerful antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-infectious making it extremely useful for all types of infection. When vaporized, its decongestant abilities help to clear sinuses, stuffy noses while soothing coughs.

Blends Well With:

Cedar Atlas, Chamomile-German, Chamomile-Roman, Cypress, Geranium, Ginger, Grapefruit, Juniper Berry, Lavender, Lemon, Sweet Marjoram, Peppermint, Pine, Rosemary, and Thyme.

DIY:

  • Turn your shower into a spa by putting 6–12 drops of Eucalyptus oil on a warm, damp washcloth and placing it in the shower just out of direct contact with the water before showering. It will create cooling, Eucalyptus-infused steam.
  • Add a couple drops to Ortho Ease Massage Oil and massage it into your feet to soothe tired feet and muscles.
