Hiking is not only a great way to get in touch with nature but an excellent way to spend time together as a family! Hiking together as a family provides exercise for everyone and can be a great Spring outdoor activity. This is especially great if you’re trying to avoid electronics this Summer! These Family Hiking Tips will help you get the most out of your next family hike.

Bring plenty of water

Packing water is one of the most valuable tips for hiking you’ll hear, however, you need to make sure you’re packing enough! One or two water bottles for an entire family isn’t enough, and if you’re worried about getting weighed down, just have everyone take a backpack or camel-back and have them carry their water! We carry two of these each time we hike, and we have found it is enough water for a moderate hike. Find appropriate level hiking trails

Some hiking trails are designed for seasoned hikers with a lot of experience! As a family, it’s probably best to take an easier trail until you get some experience under your belts! Do your research before you go hiking and make sure that the location you choose is appropriate for family hiking! We have found most trail areas have links and ratings for their hiking trails; a lot of ski slopes.  We found this before our recent trip to Colorado Springs, and it was very helpful Top 25 Hiking & Biking Trails. Take a camera or your phone

You’ll find tons of beautiful spots to take pictures in – and family pictures are even better! Take turns using the camera or use a handy camera tripod and a remote to take pictures of the whole family! You’ll be glad you did when you have some awesome pictures to show for it! My favorite is the selfie stick:) This brand works with most of today’s, popular phones. Pack lots of sunscreen & Lip Balm

It can get pretty toasty during the Summer, so you’ll want to make sure you have plenty of sunscreen for everyone. For longer hikes, it’s a good idea to look into mineral sunscreen as it can provide better protection than ordinary chemical sunscreens. There are even mineral sunscreens for babies, and the greatest advantage to using a mineral sunscreen is that it begins working immediately once applied, whereas chemical sunscreens take up to 15 minutes to start working because they have to absorb into the skin!

Make Sure to Take it easy and take lots of breaks!

Hiking is a  physical activity and can be tiring on the body especially for kids. Make sure to get adequate rest the night before a hike, and take breaks along the way if needed. It’s a good idea to pack some quick and easy healthy snacks to fuel your bodies throughout the hike too. Plan a stop at least two or three times for snacks and water. Most importantly have fun and enjoy your time together as a family. This time together is so precious:)

  4. Excellent overview of how to have fun hiking with the whole family and ensure everyone is able to enjoy the hike. Snacks and perhaps some books to identify plants and birds along the way can help engage everyone, too.
